A pressure vessel is designed to act as a cushion against changes of pressure in a system. The tank contains two compartments, one containing water, the other air stored under pressure. It acts like a surge tank; when there is a rise in pressure, water can spill into the pressure vessel, reducing the risk of burst pipes.
