How do I know if I need a surface or submersible pump?

Why is 8 metres the suction limit?
Atmospheric pressure limits practical suction lift to roughly 8 metres at sea level, regardless of pump power.
Can well water supply my whole house?

What happens in dry summers?
Well levels can fall; monitor levels and fit dry-run protection to safeguard the pump.
Do well pumps need winter protection?
Surface pumps and exposed pipework should be protected or drained against frost; submersibles below ground are naturally protected.
